About the artist

Valentyn Oleksiienko is a veteran from the Bucha district who sustained a severe injury to his cervical spinal cord while serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The injury left him without sensation in more than 70% of his body. During his rehabilitation at the UNBROKEN Center, he discovered painting as a way to express himself. He developed a unique technique of creating artworks using the wheels of his wheelchair, becoming the first artist to use this method to set a record in the Book of Records of Ukraine.

His story highlights the people at the heart of the partnership between the UNBROKEN Foundation, charitable organization DAHW, and the twin cities of Würzburg and Lviv, which have worked together for nearly three years to support recovery and develop the UNBROKEN ecosystem.
